8.3 - Promoting Research Integrity and Researcher Access: Technology Collaborations

Researchers today face a difficult task: publish articles in high profile publications to ensure funding and promotion opportunities, while being transparent about conflicts of interest. Data mandates make it imperative that research data be identified, deposited, and citable. Publishers strive to publish high-quality articles and demonstrate impact while understanding complexity around how researchers discover and access essential content. In the middle of this lie bad actors like paper mills, predatory journals, and pirate sites which exploit one side or the other for their own gains. Under pressure, some researchers might try to cut corners or worse, manipulate results to increase their publication chances. Unauthorized copies of content skim off researcher access, diluting understanding of impact and impeding researcher access to trusted versions-of-record. To provide the best service to authors and maintain the trust of readers, publishers increasingly find that they can’t go it alone. Collaboration to identify misconduct and the creation of infrastructure tools to streamline researcher access is the way to go.
